Adaptiva and Ponemon Institute: Report Finds Nearly Half of Enterprise Endpoint Devices Present Significant Security Risks

Adaptiva today released the inaugural “ Managing Risks and Costs at the Edge ” report. Sponsored by Adaptiva and conducted by Ponemon Institute, 629 IT and IT security practitioners in the United States were surveyed, representing an average organizational headcount of 13,213 and IT budget of $184,366,500. Respondents indicated that most enterprises struggle to maintain visibility and control of their endpoint devices, leading to increased security breaches and impaired ability to ward off outside attacks. Report findings show that the average enterprise now manages approximately 135,000 endpoint devices. Despite $4,252,500 of annual budget spent on endpoint protection, an average of 48 percent of devices – or 64,800 per enterprise – are at risk because they are no longer detected by the organization’s IT department or the endpoints’ operating systems have become outdated. Additionally, 63 percent of respondents find that the lack of visibility into their endpoints is the most significant barrier to achieving a strong security posture. Additional report highlights include: Sprawling Centralized Infrastructure: IT organizations are facing unprecedented rates of distribution point sprawl, which has grown rapidly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. 61 percent of respondents say distribution points have increased in the last two years, and the average endpoint has as many as 7 agents installed for remote management, further adding to management complexity. Updates Are Hardest to Maintain: 62 percent of respondents say new OS and application versions are the most difficult to maintain across all endpoints, followed by patches and security updates at 59 percent, and network settings and connectivity issues at 50 percent. Lacking Resources: 66 percent of respondents say that their organizations don’t have ample resources to minimize endpoint risk. Consequently, respondents indicate they could only stop 52 percent of attacks with their current technologies and expertise. “The world has been changing at unprecedented rates in the last two years, yet there haven’t been any significant innovations in the endpoint management space for over a decade, since the advent of cloud computing,” said Deepak Kumar, Founder and CEO of Adaptiva. “Unfortunately, most organizations are running uphill with endpoint management tools that weren’t designed for today’s distributed, decentralized, and digital-first world. Participating in the Demo Day were ten technology startups from Europe and Israel who presented their proposals for innovative tech solutions in the areas of digital health and accessible technology. Participants were competing for a spot at the global final of the OPPO Research Institute Innovation Accelerator due to be held later this year. During the Demo Day, OPPO’s Director of Hardware Engineering for Health, Timothy Weadon, shared highlights from OPPO’s own R&D in digital health before inviting a roster of technology experts, industry leaders, and social scientists to explore how the concept of “Virtuous Innovation” could be used to inspire tech startups to help solve some of the biggest issues facing the world today. Speakers included Or Retzkin, co-founder and CEO of EyeControl; Dr. Merav Galili, founding CEO of the Menomadin Foundation; Vanessa Kacherginsky, chief executive officer of The Israeli Forum for Impact Economy; and Yuval Wagner, president and founder of Access Israel. “The emergence of new technology brings with its significant impact to our health and wellbeing. The very objective of digitalization in the healthcare space is to enter uncharted territory and bridge the gap between science and engineering,” said Timothy Weadon, Director of OPPO’s Hardware Engineering for Health, “Through the OPPO Research Institute Innovation Accelerator, OPPO hopes to spur a new wave of development in medical science applications based on the concept of ‘Virtuous Innovation’ that will empower people to live healthier and happier lives.” Four startups showcase their innovative solutions and win a spot in the global finals The rapid development of technology has resulted in certain disadvantaged groups being left behind by society. OPPO initiated the OPPO Research Institute Innovation Accelerator in May this year to explore solutions to some of the most urgent issues facing the world today that could help those most marginalized by current technology. This program draws on OPPO’s brand proposition of “Inspiration Ahead” to bring together technology and innovation professionals under the shared belief that Inspiration Matters. By submitting their proposals to the accelerator program, promising startups have the opportunity to receive financial backing and professional support, among many other benefits. All proposals submitted to the OPPO Research Institute Innovation Accelerator are evaluated under the supervision of a professional Judging Committee against their ability to meet four key criteria: Feasibility, Innovation & Originality, Social Value, and Long-term Potential. Of the ten proposals shortlisted for the Demo Day in Tel Aviv, four proposals were selected to progress to the global final later this year. The four winners (displayed in no particular order) are: RightHear - The company developed a public space navigation solution for the visually impaired that provides them with a real-time audio description delivered on the app. SignNow - The company developed an app that provides on-demand sign language translation for deaf persons, interpreters, and hearing persons. 6Degrees LTD - The company developed a user-centric adaptive controller that uses AI to learn and translate individual motion into commands. SocialMind - The company develops AI & evidence-based interventions for parents of kids with autism. SPARK Microsystems Teams with UWB Alliance to Test UWB Coexistence

SPARK Microsystems, a Canadian fabless semiconductor company specializing in next-generation ultra-wideband (UWB), and UWB Alliance, an international non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and growth of the UWB industry, have initiated a joint effort to test the coexistence and aggregation capabilities of UWB technology in environments where other UWB or other wireless protocols and radio devices are in use. This first phase includes testing the interoperability and compatibility of a pair of UWB technologies operating in a single environment simultaneously with UWB transceivers from SPARK Microsystems and other industry players. “Generating empirical data through scientific testing is critical for understanding how UWB devices can coexist with other devices,” said Benjamin Rolfe, CTO, UWB Alliance. “The testing we are doing with SPARK Microsystems will enable the industry to progress forward on collaborative coexistence strategies that optimize spectrum sharing while minimizing interference. It will also provide standards-making bodies with factual documentation to aid in amending or modifying spectrum rules, allowing more UWB-enabled solutions to come to market.” Preliminary results of phase one with multiple UWB devices indicate generally good coexistence performance, with the tested devices showing no measurable performance impact from other interfering UWB devices. Testing of multiple devices in aggregation was also conducted. Phase two will expand the coexistence testing to include UWB with U-NII devices in 6 GHz (802.11ax).
