Phone.com Reports Compliance with STIR/SHAKEN FCC Anti-Fraud Requirements

Phone.com, the premier cloud-based, unified communications solution for small businesses, today reported its compliance with FCC mandated Anti-Fraud/Spam Requirements, having deployed protocols that reinforce its commitment to combating fraud. Phone.com adopted the STIR/SHAKEN framework to help eliminate scams, robocalls and illegal phone number spoofing. Moving forward, any call traveling through a phone network will have their caller ID verified by the originating service provider. From there, the provider will create a SIP identity header containing the calling number, called number, attestation level, call origination, and certificate. Caller ID authentication requirements will not only alleviate the threat of predatory spam calls and, but also discourage bad actors with drastic penalties for violations. According to the Federal Communications Commission, one telemarketer faces a record FCC fine of $225 million for transmitting approximately 1 billion robocalls, many of them illegally spoofed, to sell short-term, limited-duration health insurance plans. The robocalls falsely claimed to offer health insurance plans from well-known health insurance companies. Each month, between 3 and 5 billion of these robocalls are made and research shows that over 40% of those calls are assumed to be fraud related. “The STIR/SHAKEN attestation value can be used as an input to robocall analytic algorithms to determine the riskiness of a call,” said Joel Maloff, Phone.com chief compliance officer. “As implementations progress, so will people’s confidence that the caller ID from incoming calls is authentic. For businesses, this transparency is key to mitigating consumers’ aversion to answering the phone, a direct result of the malicious tactics this mandate is designed to eliminate.” Ari Rabban, Phone.com CEO, lauded the FCC's efforts to support phone companies, stating, “The FCC continues to support efforts by phone companies and third-party providers to empower consumers with effective robocall blocking tools. It's imperative to both protect people and businesses from fraudsters and unethical practices."
