100 Additional Small Businesses Owned by Women and People of Color in Oakland to Each Receive a $10,000 Grant from Comcast RISE, Bringing the Total Oakland Investment to $2 Million

Comcast today announced it will award an additional $1 million in grants to 100 small businesses owned by women and people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, in Oakland, bringing the total to $2 million to date. These recipients are part of the more than 9,500 entrepreneurs nationwide who have been selected as Comcast RISE awardees since November 2020. Oakland was one of five cities, including Chicago, Miami, Oakland, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., that was selected to award a $10,000 grant to 100 local businesses from the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, for a total of $5 million across 500 businesses, bringing the amount awarded nationwide to $21 million to date. Through Comcast RISE, the company also announced it will support 13,000 small businesses, owned by people of color and women, with monetary grants; a TV campaign, production of a TV commercial or consulting services from Effectv; or computer equipment, internet, voice, or cybersecurity from Comcast Business by the end of 2022. “We started our tamales business as a street food vendor in the Mission and eventually opened our storefront. Nice months ago, we relocated to a busier location in the Swan’s Market, which was an expensive move,” said Reyna Maldonado, co-owner of La Guerrera’s Kitchen, a family affair run with her mom. “Thanks to the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, we’ll be able to re-invest the funds back into our business.” In addition, Comcast RISE invests in ongoing mentorship and resources to help businesses succeed in the long run. The program has partnered with Ureeka, an online platform for entrepreneurs, to provide grant recipients with business coaching to help build skills in company foundation, growing customers and financial stability. All Comcast RISE recipients will also have a specialized online networking community within Ureeka with access to educational resources, sources of capital, and vetted experts such as U.S. Black Chambers, National Asian Pacific Islander Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Association for Enterprise Opportunity, Walker’s Legacy and Operation Hope. Comcast RISE was formed in late 2020 to give small businesses owned by people of color the grants needed to not just survive, but thrive. A FiscalNote Case Study: Predicting COVID-19 Movement During the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals who could ascertain the trajectory of the virus had supreme advantages over others. With knowledge of the virus’s next likely destination, governments, for example, could set up proper fortifications, and investors could hedge or liquidate positions. FiscalNote’s Predata Platform reportedly achieves this predictability goal. By measuring the finite distribution of human attention on social platforms, Predata’s patented methodology turns anonymized web traffic metadata into quantifiable measures of attention to individual narratives, topics and themes. Though life with impaired vision is difficult at times, Liverpool’s victory at Istanbul moved him deeply at the age of 13. There he learned the life lesson “never give up,” and Mike describes it as his biggest takeaway from Istanbul 2005. “It's being three nil down against one of the best teams in Europe,” Mike still remembers that feeling of intensity while recounting the story, “It could have been easy to roll over and give up, but they carried on. And I think the moment is short. Then things that happen help me believe that, even though it is football, it can be tied to a life lesson.” Mike’s cousin Stephen assists him by giving him a visual description of everything that’s happening on the field, and he enjoys standing in the stadium to experience the matches. The trailer, first animated episode and accompanying moving stills have attracted 28.16 million views since its release on 11 November. A beam of light comes to her rescue and places her in the gentle care of a special fairy. Now as a princess, she is travelling in a magical carriage. She believes she is going to a magical palace with dazzling lights. Along the way, she tries on glamourous dresses and basks in the spotlight, pleasantly surprised by everything that the fairy has given her. But as the lights begin to fade, her disappointment grows. The palace that she longed for is getting further from her reach, and she realises that the carriage is travelling in circles with no destination. Moments before the clock strikes midnight, the princess takes a brave step to escape and run towards an uncertain future. Upon closer look, the carriage is a prison cell enclosed by iron fences. The great wheel continues spinning, and the once glamourous clothes are changing. But is this the life that the princess desires? The dresses that the princess wears in the carriage are those that Tia has worn on stage during her modeling career. Beyond the dazzling lights that the princess yearns for lies a blurry castle. What does it all mean? How does the castle relate to “ GOODBYE PRINCESS ”? Another set of stunning motion and still images is also being released today together with Vogue Hong Kong to connect the animated video back to real life, presenting a determined Tia in a pink Jenny Packham princess dress running away from glamorously-dressed mannequins.
