The Silent, Undetected Cause of Early Heart Disease

YourUpdateTV

One in 5 people worldwide have high Lipoprotein(a) – sometimes referred to as “L-P-little a” – an important genetic risk factor for premature heart disease and stroke. If you have a family history of early heart disease or have been told that heart disease “runs in your family,” but you’ve never been told why, it’s important to know if you have high Lp(a). Recently, founder and CEO Katherine Wilemon and chief medical officer Dr. Mary McGowan from the Family Heart Foundation, participated in a nationwide satellite media tour to discuss this silent, undetected cause of early heart disease. A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/Tl08nDPSy9k Genetic disorders driving early cardiovascular disease are very common, but almost never diagnosed. Elevated levels of Lp(a) increase the risk of inflammation, blood clotting and clogging — or plaque buildup — inside your blood vessels, which can block the flow of blood and oxygen to your heart or brain and cause a heart attack or stroke. Almost everyone gets tested for high cholesterol, but in the U.S. fewer than 1% are screened for Lp(a). It’s important to know that Lp(a) levels are inherited — they’re unrelated to diet, exercise, obesity, and lifestyle. To find out if you’re affected, ask for a simple blood test to check your Lipoprotein(a). An Lp(a) test measures the level of Lipoprotein(a) in your blood. People might be surprised to know that this test is not part of a standard blood test that provides your cholesterol levels, so their doctor will need to order it directly. In order to create awareness worldwide of Lp(a), the Family Heart Foundation established the first annual Lp(a) Awareness Day on March 24. People can join the movement by following the Family Heart Foundation on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and sharing our messages about Lp(a) with friends and family. We aim to make a difference for those who have never heard of this common genetic condition. The Family Heart Foundation is addressing gaps in care through research, advocacy and awareness. The Family Heart Foundation aims to save generations of families from early heart disease by helping those at risk get the information they need to protect themselves and their family. For more information, visit MoreFamiliesMoreHearts.org About Katherine Wilemon: A decade ago, founder and CEO Katherine Wilemon created the Family Heart Foundation (formerly the FH Foundation) to improve early diagnosis and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Katherine had a heart attack at the age of 39, a diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia at 41, and, years later, she found out she also had elevated levels of lipoprotein(a). At the time of her diagnosis, Katherine realized that genetic disorders driving early cardiovascular disease were very common, but almost never diagnosed, leaving 9 out of those affected at high risk for the number one cause of death and illness. She resolved to bridge this enormous gap in diagnosis, because with early and accurate diagnosis, individuals can live decades longer without debilitating cardiovascular disease. She has led the Family Heart Foundation as it became a national catalyst for the research, education, awareness and support needed at every level of healthcare and public policy to prevent the early and devasting impact of genetic causes of heart disease and strokes including Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) and elevated Lipoprotein(a). Her vision and the mission of the Family Heart Foundation is to transform the lives of millions of families by assuring that everyone has the knowledge required to fight the early onset of heart attacks and strokes About Dr. Mary McGowan: Dr. Mary P. McGowan is the Chief Medical Officer of the Family Heart Foundation and the Co-Director of the Lipid Clinic at Dartmouth Hitchcock Heart and Vascular Center. Dr. McGowan received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts and remained at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center for both internship and residency. She completed her fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and is the author of numerous articles and five books. She has been the principal investigator on more than 30 national and international clinical trials and has lectured widely in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia on cholesterol metabolism. Dr. McGowan has previously served on the alumni board at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, the National Lipid Association Board of Directors and the NH Affiliate of the American Heart Association Board. Dr. McGowan lives in Bedford, NH with her husband, and they have three children. About the Family Heart Foundation: The Family Heart Foundation is a non-profit research and advocacy organization. The Foundation is a pioneer in the application of real-world evidence, patient-driven advocacy, and multi-stakeholder education to help prevent heart attacks and strokes caused by familial hypercholesterolemia and elevated lipoprotein(a), two common genetic disorders that have an impact across generations. The Family Heart Foundation conducts innovative research to break down barriers to diagnosis and management of inherited lipid disorders; educates patients, providers, and policy makers; advocates for change; and provides hope and support for families impacted by heart disease and stroke caused by FH, HoFH, and high Lp(a). The organization was founded in 2011 as the FH Foundation. For more information, visit FamilyHeart.org and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Opens Wildlife Explorers Basecamp at the San Diego Zoo

YourUpdateTV

A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/O343OcgruC0 There is excitement in the Southern California air as the San Diego for the opening of its newest and most anticipated area of the Zoo – the Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. Built on the site of the former Children’s Zoo, Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is a 3.2-acre state-of-the-art, multi-ecosystem experience designed to provide guests of all ages with an up-close look at nature and offer fresh, high-tech interactive opportunities that nurture empathy for wildlife and encourage future caretakers of the planet. Inside Basecamp, Zoo guests will visit with a variety of fascinating species and engage on a deeper level by utilizing full sensory and multifaceted elements, including “parallel play” opportunities from climbing and crawling around a massive tree house, to exploring through amazing water play elements; experiencing interactive touch screen games, using microscopes to reveal natural wonders, and specialized animation that utilizes artificial-intelligence (AI), dynamic lighting and whole-room scented environments. Wildlife Explorers Basecamp encompasses eight buildings and habitats dispersed throughout four zones, featuring wildlife that live in these ecosystems: Rainforest, Wild Woods, Marsh Meadows and Desert Dunes. The Rainforest zone is centered around the 10,000-square-foot McKinney Family Spineless Marvels building, where guests will experience invertebrates—including crustaceans, arachnids and insects—such as leafcutter ants, spiders, scorpions, stick insects and more. Inside, there is a pollinator experience with giant beeswax-fragrant honeycombs and an observation pane that gives guests the chance to see the workings of a real-life beehive. The projected migration flyover encounter showcases various insects, including migrating monarch butterflies, grasshoppers and dragonflies as part of a large meadow scene that curves along walls and encompasses a domed ceiling. The Wild Woods area offers guests the chance to visit with unusual wildlife species, such as coatis and squirrel monkeys, which are both native to Central and South America. The space features the striking Prebys Foundation Discovery Bridge and a 20-foot-tall Tree of Dreams—a tree house designed as an ancient oak. This dynamic and detailed nature-play tree provides multiple points of access for guests—from a suspension bridge and net tunnel to a spiral staircase—and a parallel play experience to the squirrel monkeys that live in the adjacent habitat. Water play is another focus of this woodland-themed zone, which includes a waterfall that flows into a gentle meandering stream, an exhilarating splash pad, unpredictable water jets, and a bluff area with a boulder scramble made to encourage exploration. Marsh Meadows aims to evoke a sense of visiting marsh-like habitats, including swamps and estuaries. The pathway through this area was designed to help convey a sense that guests are inhabiting the marsh along with frogs, fish and other wildlife that lives there. The central hub of Marsh Meadows is the Art and Danielle Engel-funded Jake’s Cool Critters building—a two-story herpetology and ichthyology structure with more than 7,000 square feet of immersive environments, digital media, learning opportunities and educational classroom spaces, created to engage wildlife explorers of all ages. The wildlife here includes snakes, amphibians, crocodilians, turtles and lizards, including endangered Fijian iguanas. At the nearby Rady Ambassadors Headquarters, guests will meet wildlife from all over the planet, including a two-toed sloth and a prehensile-tailed porcupine, and learn more about how everyone can help conserve them in their native habitats. Finally, Desert Dunes, a dry desert wash-themed area, offers fun boulder play prospects for climbing, scrambling, hopping and more. Reptile sculptures and petroglyphs can be found among the rocks, while cool caves provide shaded areas where guests can beat the heat, like their desert wildlife counterparts—including the fennec fox, prairie dog and burrowing owl. Conservation is at the forefront in the design of Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, as builders worked to incorporate advanced sustainable materials throughout. A portion of the Spineless Marvels building was made with ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE)—a fluorine-based plastic that is created to be more resistant to corrosion. The system is 100% recyclable, and consists of a series of custom-sized Teflon multilayered “air pillows”—which, when filled with air, provide solar insulation while also reducing the need for artificial lighting. The Zoo’s talented horticulture team worked to identify more than 100 trees from the previous habitat to preserve and replant within Basecamp. For more information about Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, its many features, the wildlife that lives there and how you can help San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance conserve wildlife and build a world where all live thrives, visit the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp webpage. Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is included with admission to the San Diego Zoo. How To Bet Podcast Back and Better Than Ever

HowToBet.com

Have you learned about How To Bet yet? With well over six-figure views, so many people have already been a part of the How To Bet phenomenon, as show hosts Daryl Fein and Sean “The Genius” Miller took the National Football League and NCAA College Football by storm in the second half of 2021 and into 2022. But football is over (well, the USFL is back, but more on that in later releases), and now is the most exciting time of the year for college hoops fans. March Madness is upon us! As hot as the dynamic duo were during football season, helping bettors pick winners at an almost absurd rate, there was no way they were going to let fans and bettors down by NOT showing up for this frenetic three-week run of games. So, the How To Bet podcast is back, and it is better than ever. There will be two shows weekly: one to pick the Thursday-Friday games in the first round and Sweet 16, and another to pick the Saturday-Sunday contests in the Round of 32 and Elite Eight, plus one for the Final Four and one for the NCAA Championship Game, which will be played April 4 at at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, LA. There are a few changes, though, to the format: there is a new face that will be on your screen–Nery Rodriguez– and the second show each week is going to be LIVE. That is correct: How To Bet is going live once a week, to help get bettors up-to-date information in their quest to beat the bookies. To say that the hosts are excited might be an understatement. “The fall and winter were great,” Miller said. “I thought the format was good for the NFL games. But this is different: you obviously need to see which teams win on Thursday and Friday to be able to pick games on the weekend. You can’t project. “Some of these other shows are taping one show for the week, and that is good for the first two nights–the First Round and the Sweet 16, as well as the Final Four semifinals–but what about those other games? They offer value to bettors, and we thought about how we could make it better for them. Live shows seemed to be the way to go, and now, we get to talk about March Madness twice a week. “I think it also gives us an opportunity to test some things out for the future. When this works, we know we can go live for UEFA Champions League games, MLB, the NBA playoffs, and down the line. I think this opens up unlimited opportunities for us to get bettors more information.” Miller also spoke about Rodriguez joining the show as both a contributor and director. “I think this new How To Bet revamp might have the best lineup since the Wu Tang Clan last graced the stage,” Miller joked. “Of course, I know Nery from the New Jersey sports betting scene. We both have covered sports in the Garden State for years. I think he will be good to have as a third voice, but his work behind the scenes is where he will shine brightest. Nery has the skills to get the information out there to the bettors very quickly, and that is something that is obviously important during a time-sensitive tournament. “As someone who has been to two Final Fours–2008 in San Antonio, and 2009 in Detroit to see my North Carolina Tarheels win it all–I am very excited to help bettors win some money. I think we were very successful during football, and I expect the same here. I can also see the possibilities down the line, and that is even more exciting. “The How To Bet podcast is ready to take over, and I love that I am a part of it.” You can watch all the shows on the How to Bet YouTube channel. Check out the First Round show now on the channel, and the Sweet 16 episode on Tuesday, March 22. Tune in on Saturday, March 19 and Saturday, March 26, at 9 a.m. for the Round of 32 and Elite Eight live shows. SUPER73® unveils groundbreaking C1X moto concept, new kid’s e-bike, updated SUPER73-Z e-bike, and more

SUPER73

Since its inception, California-based SUPER73® has challenged the conventions within the emerging e-bike community and helped expand the perception of personal transportation. The founders never wanted to limit their horizons, establishing the company as an American lifestyle adventure brand specializing in electric motorbikes. And with this mindset, a range of increasingly sophisticated products have emerged from the SUPER73 headquarters in Irvine, CA. Each new model brought a stepped improvement in terms of technology and rider enjoyment, and 2022 will herald a new chapter in the fast-paced SUPER73 story when the biggest expansion plans to date are revealed. SUPER73 is simultaneously announcing the groundbreaking C1X Concept, new entry-level model in the SUPER73-Z Miami, a brand new kid’s bike in the SUPER73 Youth Model, an updated SUPER73-R Brooklyn, plus new colorways for its entire 2022 range. SUPER73-C1X CONCEPT Designed to reformat and redefine the line between e-bike and motorcycle conventions, the C1X is a street-legal concept that will provide a “step-up” vehicle from the current SUPER73 e-bike offerings, elevating adventures by achieving motorcycle performance with dramatically reduced size and weight. Development of the C1X is the direct result of feedback from existing SUPER73 riders, a large percentage of whom expressed interest in graduating to a street-legal motorcycle. The radical SUPER73-C1X Concept represents a significant leap forward in the company’s development program to enable its worldwide band of loyal followers to make a logical transition from the existing SUPER73-RX flagship model. With a targeted top speed of more than 75mph, the production version of the C1X will require a rider to possess a motorcycle endorsement to their driver’s license, vehicle registration and full insurance. However, its 31” seat height and minimal footprint make it highly maneuverable and lightweight, providing an ideal platform for riders wishing to pass the DMV riding test. The SUPER73 design team began its research by studying the current crop of production motorcycles and addressing what prevented them from being accessible to core SUPER73 customers. Among its priorities was a reduction in the overall footprint of a typical motorcycle. This was accomplished with the introduction of 15” wheels versus the 17” motorcycle counterparts. The team also took a revolutionary approach to mounting the motor rearward of the swingarm pivot point. This innovative architecture permitted an ultra-agile 51” wheelbase and removed the chain slack issues experienced with conventional motorcycles. Further enhancing the Concept’s agility is a mass-centralized chassis/battery configuration. The SUPER73-C1X Concept will introduce a fast charging solution that will enable an 80% charge in less than an hour, providing a city range of approximately 100 miles*. The Concept will also have a top speed in excess of 75mph, allowing it to bridge the gap between urban exploration and highway connectivity. With two wheels and its small footprint, C1X leaves the headache of parking to others. Development of the C1X is well underway and SUPER73 is accepting reservations for a late 2023 production date. Reservations for the groundbreaking electric motorbike can be placed for $73. SUPER73 YOUTH SERIES The SUPER73 Youth Series came about because research revealed that a large percentage of existing SUPER73 riders had young families and were looking at ways to transform their riding experience into a family activity. This was particularly apparent during the COVID-19 lock downs, where families were spending extended time together and needed regular “screen breaks” to keep the learning process fresh by creating real world adventures. This model will be a great way for children to get outdoors with the whole family. Forging a new path, the ergonomics of the SUPER73 Youth Series are optimized for children aged from 4-8 years old. A moto-inspired seat and modular foot controls bring a new level of ride comfort and performance for children**. SUPER73 advocates safety gear for all riders, no matter their age. Styling cues for the Youth Series pull from both existing SUPER73 DNA as well as nostalgic BMX frame elements, like the gooseneck and loop tail design. The lightweight aluminum frame provides agility, performance, and can be easily carried by parents. The junior e-bike features stylish fat tires, a removable battery for charging convenience, and in place of pedals, a red twist throttle to clearly communicate the control input to novice riders. "We’re excited to create a new market that will allow families to spend more time together. We know the experience children gain will give them more confidence and independence, helping them to develop and explore their environment. The Youth Series is the first in a number of new products aimed at younger riders, and we hope they will enjoy the freedom our products can bring throughout their lives, no matter what age,” said Michael Cannavo, Co-founder and CMO. The SUPER73 Youth Series is definitely not a toy. It is equipped with a high-quality drivetrain and components that will ensure reliable performance throughout its life. The Youth Series is more than just a kid’s bike; it's their first step into the two-wheeled world of fun and discovery. The SUPER73 Youth Series will be available for reservation from super73.com. Customers can pre-order and secure their place in line with a $100 deposit at the introductory price of $995. SUPER73-Z Miami This new model is an evolution of the iconic Z1, one of SUPER73’s original products. The new SUPER73-Z Miami features an extensive list of significant improvements to refresh the entry-level model, including a lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum-alloy frame with improved ergonomics. Additionally, the Z Miami has been upgraded with a convenient removable battery, allowing more charging options. The model also comes with a new motor that will provide greater performance and the option of pedal assist. The SUPER73-Z Miami has even gained Bluetooth connectivity via the flexible SUPER73 phone app, which enables the user to change rider settings and more. The internally geared brushless DC hub motor is capable of 1200 watts of peak power. Coupled to a durable 615 watt-hour removable battery, the SUPER73-Z Miami is capable of providing more than 30 miles* of range at 20mph under throttle-only operation, or approximately 50 miles* of range using ECO pedal assist mode via the selectable riding modes in the SUPER73 phone app. Additionally, it will be supplied pre-wired for easy installation of optional accessory lighting. The 28” seat height will comfortably accommodate riders between 4’6” - 5’11”. This will allow the vast majority of people to enjoy the new SUPER73-Z Miami, which is a fun and accessible entry point into the world of SUPER73. When it arrives in Spring of 2022, the Z Miami will be available in a fresh range of colors, including Powder Gray, Panthro Blue, Sriracha Red and Prickly Pink. The new model will also be compatible with a wide range of SUPER73 accessories, allowing riders to fully personalize it. SUPER73-R Brooklyn Launched in 2020, the flagship SUPER73-R and RX models have proved hugely popular with riders looking for a versatile electric motorbike that offers full suspension, high-performance disc brakes, a lightweight aluminum frame, and one of the most powerful motors in its class. The two models were very similar, which led the SUPER73 design and engineering teams to provide greater clarity between the two products. For the 2022 Model Year, the SUPER73-RX will continue to offer a more overt off-road vibe, while the SUPER73-R Brooklyn will be focused on “street performance.” As such, it gains new street-specific SUPER73 LZRD tires for extended commuter rides. Other refinements include a new SUPER73 mid-rise “Drago” Chromoly handlebar and Speedster Low Profile seat. The SUPER73-R Brooklyn now includes a front and rear lighting package plus a horn as well as air assist for its inverted coil spring fork to enhance comfort and control. As before, the SUPER73-R Brooklyn has a powerful internally geared brushless DC hub motor capable of 2300 watts peak output. Powered by a state-of-the-art 960 watt-hour battery, the R can deliver more than 40 miles* of range at 20mph under throttle activation, or in excess of 75 miles* using ECO pedal assist mode, selected via the SUPER73 phone app. As part of the 2022 MY update program, the SUPER73-R Brooklyn and RX models will be available in three colors: Obsidian, Blu Tang, and Dark Earth. The SUPER73-R Brooklyn and RX models will be available from Spring 2022 and can be ordered via super73.com. *Battery range estimates depend on conditions such as rider weight, speed, temperature, wind, tire pressure, terrain, incline, etc. Mileage may vary. **SUPER73 strongly encourages certified safety gear to be worn by all riders, particularly children, to help protect against or reduce the severity of injuries. Helmets are especially important to protect the head but other safety gear should not be overlooked. Take Action for Heart Health

YourUpdateTV

Heart disease is responsible for over 600,000 deaths in the U.S. each year making it the leading (non-pandemic) cause of death in the U.S. Heart disease includes a number of different conditions that relate to your heart’s rhythm, muscle, and blood vessels. Luckily there are things we can all do to lower our risk for, or even prevent heart disease. Learning about what your genetics can tell you about your heart can be a good first step. Recently, Senior Product Scientist at 23andMe, Alisa Lehman, and Chief Clinical Officer at Lemonaid Health, Dr. Davis Liu, MD, participated in a nationwide satellite media tour to discuss how genetics can help people take a proactive approach to their health. A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/213m-kngFRI When we look at the human genome, everyone is very similar. However, there are places in our DNA that are different from person to person, which are called genetic variants. Some of these variants are associated with certain health conditions. At 23andMe, scientists look at the variants you may have and can tell you if you may be genetically predisposed to developing conditions like type 2 diabetes, or migraine, or conditions related to heart disease. When it comes to heart disease, 23andMe’s personalized genetic reports can currently tell you if you're at an increased likelihood of developing conditions that affect your heart health, like high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, or high cholesterol. While genetics can give you a lot of insights about your likelihood of developing heart disease, there are many other factors that impact whether you actually go on to develop heart disease, and many of these factors are under your control, like your diet or exercise habits. Consult with your healthcare professional if you are concerned about your likelihood of developing heart disease, or if you have a personal or family history of heart disease. For more information, visit 23andMe.com About Alisa Lehman: Alisa is a Senior Product Scientist and has been working at 23andMe since 2015. Her team works to create scientifically accurate, consumer friendly genetic health features. Alisa holds a B.S. in Biology from MIT and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University. About Davis Liu: Davis Liu, MD, is a board certified family doctor and Chief Clinical Officer at Lemonaid Health. Previously he worked at Kaiser Permanente in Roseville California for 15 years and lives in the Sacramento area with his wife and two teenagers. As the only doctor in his family, Dr. Liu feels compelled to make sure all Americans get the right health information to stay healthy and well. Celebrate the First Annual California State Parks Week June 14-18, 2022

Save the Redwoods League

The public is invited to celebrate the first annual California State Parks Week, June 14-18, presented by California State Parks, Save the Redwoods League, Parks California and the California State Parks Foundation. Through special community events and in-person and virtual programming, this inaugural event celebrates California’s 279 state parks and the people who visit and help protect these iconic places. A complete list of the week’s events and how to participate are available at CAStateParksWeek.org. “State Parks is excited to welcome the first-ever California State Parks Week, which celebrates the oldest state park system in the nation,” said Armando Quintero, director of California State Parks. “California’s state parks are as unique and diverse as the state itself. They help preserve and protect the state’s natural and cultural history for generations to come. I hope this week gives everyone a chance to visit the outdoors, enjoy its beauty and find their own connection with California’s great outdoors.” California State Parks Week is modeled after National Park Week, and it helps advance the “Outdoor Access For All” initiative championed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as well as the recently launched “California Outdoors For All” initiative. This initiative expands outdoor access to all Californians through focused investments in open space infrastructure and outdoor programming, with a priority of expanding access in underserved communities. Why California State Parks Week? The COVID-19 pandemic brought many challenges to California’s communities, but it also illuminated the important connection of the outdoors to our physical and mental well-being. Parks across the U.S. experienced increased visitation in 2020-21, and California State Parks Week underscores the important role parks play in communities statewide. “As we emerge from the impacts of the pandemic, we are excited to celebrate California’s resilience and expand access to so many joyful experiences and benefits of nature through California State Parks Week,” said Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League. "It is inspiring to see how California’s state park system has grown over generations. The parks encompass not only the state’s most iconic landscapes, but also the diversity of our people, cultural experiences and moments of joy to be found along thousands of miles of trails.” California State Parks protects the best of the state’s natural and cultural history; more than 340 miles of coastline; the tallest, largest and among the oldest trees in the world; and deserts, lakes, rivers and beaches. Across 279 parks statewide there are more than 5,200 miles of trails, 15,000 campsites, prehistoric and historic archeological sites, ghost towns, historic homes and monuments — all waiting to be explored. “California State Parks Week is a fun and inclusive way to celebrate the wonder and sense of community that the outdoors provides to the people of California and visitors from all over the world,” said Kindley Walsh Lawlor, president and CEO of Parks California. California State Parks Week Themed Days: “Parks have been there for us in so many ways. As we recognize the partners, volunteers, state parks staff and many others who make California’s state park system the gem it is today, there is so much to celebrate! The themes for each day bring all those contributions into focus,” said Rachel Norton, executive director of California State Parks Foundation.
